The majestic Diskit Gompa built in 1420 offers a great view of the valley below. It is the second largest Buddhist monastery in Leh after Thiksey Gompa. A 32-meter-tall statue of Future Buddha or Maitreya Buddha is the main landmark of the valley. Just a 15-min drive from Diskit takes visitors to Hunder which is popular for its desert landscape and outdoor thrills including camel rides, quad biking, and overnight camping. About 70 km of deafening emptiness beyond Hunder, lies one of the last inhabited settlements on the Indian side of LOC, the town of Turtuk. Settled by Balti people, Turtuk is a lovely place that is known for orchards, a two-storey courtyard house-turned-museum, and a medieval monastery-turned-mosque from where one can see K2, the second highest mountain in the world.
